OBeG was founded in 2012 by Benjamin Sarfo Okrah. In 2008, Benjamin was working on the effect
of heavy metals on anaerobic digestion during his thesis at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and observed hydrogen production in addition to methane production .
Benjamin decided to find a simple and a cost effective process to completely oxidize hydrogen containing compounds towards hydrogen production. It was found out that
the conventional way of using one oxidizing agent promotes a natural barrier to biohydrogen production.
Instead of carrying out oxidation with only one oxidizing agent, Benjamin found out that at least two oxidizing agents in the right proportion facilitates hydrogen production without external energy input.
Further research work on heavy metals concentrations found to simultaneously inhibit methane formation and stimulate hydrogen formation led to the hydrogen production process used by OBeG.
The work done in the following years ultimately led to the start-up company Okrah Bio-energie Gewinnung (OBeG) UG (haftungsbeschränkt).
